As we reported yesterday, an autistic child named Rhett was suspended “indefinitely” for drawing a picture of a cartoon bomb.

Now the suspension has been lifted.

Amy Parham, Rhett’s mother, said the South Carolina middle school determined that the picture was directly linked to the Rhett’s autism. It took a two hour hearing, involving several school officials and an autism expert, to conclude that Rhett was not a danger to his fellow peers.

Amy said, “They did not suspend Rhett and they did not recommend expulsion. They realized that his disability was the reason that he made statements and drew the picture, and that he had no malicious intent what so ever.”

Rhett drew the picture over the weekend while at home and then took it to Hillcrest Middle School. He was removed from the school “indefinitely” after some older children saw the picture and told teachers.

Amy said the boy’s favorite video game called Bomber Man may have inspired the drawing.

She was initially disturbed when her son was removed from school. On Monday Amy said, “They actually reiterated to me they knew he was non-violent. They knew he was not actually having a bomb, creating or making a bomb. But that they could not go with out making an example of him and take some type of action because they were worried about their perception. Perception is actually the word he used. Perception is reality, and parents might think you have a bomb or [might be] violent.”

Amy said she was thankful to receive overwhelming support from across the country after Rhett was suspended.

The school stands by its decision to suspend Rhett until a hearing was held to determine if his behavior was due to his disability.

Oby Lyles, a spokesman for Greenville County Schools, responded directly to Amy in a public statement released on Wednesday.

He said, “It is troubling that incomplete and inaccurate information has been shared by the mother about the incident involving her child at Hillcrest Middle School. School districts are prohibited by law from releasing specific student discipline information without parental permission. The district prefers full disclosure of the incident, but the mother has refused our request to allow details about the incident to be released. The school administration responded appropriately when threatening comments were made, investigated it fully, and acted in accord with applicable laws, policies and procedures to bring this incident to its proper closure.”

What is wrong with society where a child cannot draw a picture of a bomb? Imagination now equals dis-enrollment?

  • Malikail

the one thing I’m absolutely certain of, nothing the administrators did was appropriate.

  • poa

Eric Holders past comments about brainwashing has evidently worked! When i was a kid our teachers in art class helped us draw fighting scenes, guns, bombs, and guns. What kind of leaders is this country building? America won’t have top worry about some outside threat Our leaders are doing a fine job of destroying the Constitution & what remains of it.

  • Krissy

Boy I’m glad we cleared that up! Don’t want anyone getting hurt over a cartoon drawing now!

Zero tolerance is the bane of rational thoughts and common sense. It calls for a black and white reasons or explanation in a world full of grey shades. If it takes more than one minute for you to decide the merit of this incident for expulsion or non expulsion than you should not be in charge of anything requiring a complete thought process. McDonalds is always looking for people !

Looks just like the Netanyahu picture at the UN.

That’s what you get for sending kids to government school. The answer is to home school and privatize your child’s education, so they can draw a picture of a Bomb and maybe congratulated for their artistic endeavor, rather than exhiled for creativity. Government schools are the problem. Where in the US Constitution did we grant the government the right to provide education to the people? It’s not there. Wake up sheeple. Educate yourself and your kids. The government is not going to do it for you.

I would think that intelligent adults could recognize the difference between art and the real thing. This suppression of creativity has got to stop and I object heavily to them bringing his disability into play when all he did was draw a damn picture. Why wasn’t his ability to create or draw celebrated?

  • Andrew

The school did nothing appropriately and to try and “shame” the mother with this really immature public statement only goes to show that the school is more about saving face than doing the right thing.

What are we teaching our kids when we cannot admit to own mistakes in our school system?
This will only cause more controversy and division among parents, students and teachers.

The school should have come out and said “we over reacted to a picture”.

  • Andrew

I think in protest, people need to start mailing pictures of bomber man to the school from all over the nation.

    • born2think

YES!! I am doing that today! Good idea.

  • SRQTad

Hmmm… So… it’s his disability that caused him to draw a cartoon bomb?? I suppose Mel Brooks should be considered “disabled” for “Telegram for Mr. Mongo!… Telegram for Mr Mongo!”, in Blazing Saddles or think the same about the writers for the scene in the Pink Panther when inspector Clouseau was handed the same type of cartoon bomb. I’m telin’ ya, they are turning damn near everything into a mental disorder of one sort or another.

  • Sar Gasm

He could have taken that on a plane, hijacked the plane with it and flown it into The White House or The IRS.

  • born2think

“So today, kids, we are going to study about the Vietnam war. Open your history books to page 230. Are your black permanent markers ready? Good. Now just like we did for the section on WW2, we will look for pictures of guns and planes and mark them out. Whoever finds all 17 of those horrid pictures and marks them out gets a bag of candycorn!”

  • Jonathan Hoppman

Stupid accusation in the first place. Who the crap would suspend a special needs kid, because he/she drew a BOMB on a piece of paper? These idiots need to take preschool and learn how much damage a paper cut causes! Stupid and dumb! Makes me really angry how crap like this happens often.

  • sick and tired

No kid should be suspended for drawing any of these pictures. The ruling itself is a farce, a slap in the face of every kid and parent, special need or otherwise.

    • Stan

As children we were allowed to draw what we wanted, we played cowboys, we had bb guns which our parents supervised. Now you cant even play cops and robbers, except on video games, which by the way is not the best influence on our children. But there again its just my opinion.

  • Matt Owens

No mention of a bomb squad this time?? I wan’t the details on that.. or did that just not happen

  • larrybud

The result was proper, the reason is MUCH flawed!

You guys should have seen some of the stuff I drew I even had arrows pointing to the corpses with the teachers full name.

  • Salsify

When I was in elementary school in the 50’s we had wooden desks.Over time kids had carved things into all of them, especially American planes bombing Japanese destroyers and American jets shooting down Russian MiG fighters [Korean War].
The teachers didn’t mind unless there were curses or swastikas.

    Even SC is going crazy.
