Protecting Free Speech with Unstoppable Domains

This article contains affiliate links. With every domain purchase you make, you directly support Truth In Media.

In recent years and months, independent content creators have seen their work erased from the web by centralized entities. It’s more important than ever for people to be able to protect their content without fear of being shut down.

Software company Unstoppable Domains is aiming to put an end to online censorship by providing blockchain-based domains. While offering free speech protection in its mission to provide uncensorable websites, Unstoppable Domains also aims to simplify sending and receiving crypto payments.

Unstoppable provides two services: an address for receiving crypto payments, as well as providing a blockchain domain that cannot be censored. Rather than sharing a lengthy, complicated conventional cryptocurrency wallet address, Unstoppable Domains provides a “yourname.crypto” address for sending and receiving crypto payments. The system currently supports over 20 cryptocurrencies with plans to include more.

When you buy a domain, it will be stored in your cryptocurrency wallet, and in this wallet your domain can’t be transferred or removed by anyone but yourself. Unstoppable Domains currently supports two domain extensions: .zil, a low-fee extension on the Zilliqa blockchain, and .crypto, which is on the more widely known Ethereum blockchain.

Bradley Kam, Co-founder & head of business development at Unstoppable Domains, illustrated the distinction between conventional .com websites and what Unstoppable is offering: “The way it works in the current domain world is there’s one centralized registry, and then there are permissioned writers to that registry like GoDaddy and Google Domains. And they have the ability to move your domain and they have the ability to take your domain. That’s the biggest difference is that this is a censorship-resistant system, and they also work in payments.”

Unstoppable Domains is a sponsor of the Truth In Media with Ben Swann podcast. For every domain purchase you make, you are directly supporting Truth In Media while also helping to ensure your own content cannot be removed. Visit truthinmedia.com/unstoppable to learn more about how to set up your own payment address and domain while helping support Ben Swann and Truth in Media.

Brave Browser Explained

This article contains affiliate links. Every time you click and download, and use Brave you support Truth In Media.

You may have heard that if you download the Brave Browser that you directly support Truth in Media. But you may be thinking “what exactly is the Brave Web Browser?” In this blog post I will break down what the Brave Browser is and how you are supporting Ben Swann and Truth in Media with every download and tip. The Truth in Media team has been using the Brave web browser for over half a year (using it to create this post!).

Brave Browser Overview

Brave web browser is a free and open source browser created by CEO Brendan Eich, formerly of Netscape and Mozilla, and CTO Brian Bondy. It has built in features like ad blockers, popup blockers, tracking blockers and a tipping feature to tip your favorite content creators.

Brave is available on both desktop and mobile.

With Brave you can surf the web up to 8x faster than Chrome and Safari. Save money on mobile data by not having to download unwanted content from ads and trackers. The average mobile surfer uses $23 worth of data a month just on trackers and ads!

Brave makes it top priority to keep your information safe. They have built-in ad blockers, systems to fight malware, and block trackers. From their website:

We’re not in the personal data business.

Our servers neither see nor store your browsing data – it stays private, on your devices, until you delete it. Which means we won’t ever sell your data to third parties.

Brave blocks the software that follows you around

The “private” browsing mode that others offer is not truly private. Brave’s many privacy features, including “Private Tabs with Tor*,” stop trackers and provide a deep level of protection.

Brave has made it easy to support your favorite content creators with a tipping feature. So how do you support Ben Swann and Truth in Media by using Brave? Lucky for us Brave has made it simple. And good news for you, it is 100% confidential. We don’t know who downloads, or who is tipping us.

First, for a limited time Brave has offered rewards (BAT) to creators who have their fans download and use the browser. This is the easiest way to support what we are doing. Simply click here and download the browser to your desktops and mobile devices and start using it. That’s it, just use the browser.

The second way is to tip the Truth in Media website. To do this click the Brave icon that is to the right of the address bar at the top of the browser. A drop down will pop up. Then click “SEND A TIP…”

brave browser tipping

Clicking “send a tip” will open a new window where you can select your tip amount. This is also where you can make the tip recurring monthly. So every month, as long as you have Brave rewards, a tip will automatically be set to Truth in Media.

That’s it! That’s all you need to do to support Ben Swann and Truth in Media using Brave. Click here download Brave and start supporting Ben Swann today!

Don’t forget to make your freshly downloaded Brave Web Browser your default browser.

Dash Spotlight: Dash Is Helping Solve Hyperinflation in Venezuela

Welcome our Truth In Media spotlight on Dash Digital Cash.

Venezuela’s economic crisis is infamous across the world. But could Dash Digital Cash be a solution to that problem?

The South American country has been plagued by never-ending inflation and devaluation of its central currency, the bolivar.

As we reported on Reality Check, the Venezuelan government recognizes the opportunity with cryptocurrency to solve its economic problems. But their approach is the petro, a cryptocurrency essentially backed by oil, not the blockchain. Take a look.

https://youtu.be/xGkymaMtSPM

In that episode, we reported, “The two major selling points of blockchain are radical transparency and decentralization, meaning no one can manipulate the supply or the transactions, including the government. And it’s those two aspects of blockchain that governments are not fans of.”

So what can the people of Venezuela do to solve this problem? A group of citizens have discovered the power of Dash Digital Cash to advance genuine, long-term solutions.

The Dash Venezuela project, led by an organization called Dash Caracas, was launched in 2017 by Eugenia Alcala Sucre. She saw the currency’s potential to help Venezuelans break free from government currency and achieve real prosperity.

A proposal was submitted to the Dash Treasury last year to finance a series of educational conferences, aimed to teach Venezuelans, step by step, how to use Dash Digital Cash as a much-needed alternative to government issued money. It easily gained the votes necessary to fund the project.

The results have been promising, with now 15 Dash communities within the Dash Caracas organization.

In less than a year, more than 4,000 people have attended these educational conferences. And the number of entrepreneurs accepting Dash as payment has grown to over 100.

These conferences are an inspiring example of effective outreach, supporting widespread adoption of Dash use throughout Venezuela.

Dash Spotlight: Enabling a Better Life for Kids in South Africa

Welcome to our Truth In Media Sponsor Spotlight on Dash Digital Cash.

This Dash Spotlight highlights one of a number of grassroots efforts by the Dash community: the Dash Leopards soccer school in South Africa.

The Dash Leopards are working to enable a better life for kids in South Africa through sports, education and social activities.

Dash has allowed the soccer program founder, Coach Ricardo, and the other coaches, to use soccer as a tool to help the players with life skills.

The Dash Leopards program also offers tutoring to help children with their schoolwork, and they’re learning about healthy food and nutrition, receiving snacks and smoothies prepared with fresh ingredients.

Dash Africa’s community outreach efforts have brought awareness of Dash across the African continent, a place where Dash can truly thrive due to Africa’s large numbers of unbanked individuals, who are familiar with using mobile phones for handling money.

Cryptocurrencies like Dash are a natural fix for the continuous problems with the devaluation and corruption associated with fiat currency. Fortunately for Africa, Dash is a decentralized currency that holds value across the globe.

Rory MacDonald & Chael Sonnen Are In the Fight for Dash

Welcome our Truth in Media sponsor spotlight on Dash Digital Cash.

Dash Digital Cash is the exclusive sponsor of Reality Check and the Truth in Media project.

This edition of our dash spotlight highlights the recent Dash sponsorships of Bellator fighters Rory MacDonald and Chael Sonnen.

Why would Dash sponsor mixed martial arts fighters? Because they have fans all over the world, and Dash is a global cryptocurrency.

Canadian Rory MacDonald is one of the world’s top-ranked MMA fighters. He holds a 20-4 record and has fought in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He is currently the Bellator welterweight title.

After his latest victory, MacDonald accepted the title belt wearing Dash gear.

MacDonald sees his dash sponsorship as just the beginning of a long-term partnership with dash, telling CCN, “The exciting thing about [the Dash budget system] is that it’s a voting process, so we can make all kinds of different, unique ideas to pitch to the network … it could be the next wave of sponsorships pouring into the MMA community.”

Another major figure in the MMA world, Chael Sonnen, is also sponsored by Dash Digital Cash.

Sonnen has fought in five different fighting leagues including the UFC, and won the Bellator Heavyweight World Grand Prix Tournament in January. He’s an ESPN analyst and fight commentator, and routinely appears on CBS sports radio with Jim Rome.

Sonnen maintains a massive social media following of over 800,000 Twitter followers and 10 million views on YouTube. He’s been interviewed by the Dash community and is a supporter of decentralization.

These sponsorships are just another way Dash is disrupting the status quo. Cryptocurrencies like Dash can disrupt funding for MMA by allowing fighters to go directly to the source of their funding, instead of bending to the control of a fighting monopoly.

As more people are introduced to the benefits of decentralized currencies, the more people will realize the liberating power and potential cryptocurrencies like Dash.

Note: Chael Sonnen won the Bellator Heavyweight World Grand Prix Tournament in January, but because the tournament is tiered he technically did not win a “championship.” The article above has been updated to reflect this information.

Dash Spotlight: Living With Digital Cash in Portsmouth

Welcome our Truth in Media sponsor spotlight on Dash Digital Cash.

Dash Digital Cash is the exclusive sponsor of Reality Check and the Truth in Media project.

This edition of our Dash Spotlight features Joël Valenzuela, who is living a cash-free life in Portsmouth, New Hampshire thanks to Dash Digital Cash.

Valenzuela, the editor of Dash Force News, was recently featured on CNN about living a completely cash-free life in Portsmouth. He’s able to pay his electric bill, pay his rent, and live off Dash alone.

Portsmouth has become the hub of the cryptocurrency movement in New Hampshire. The town of 22,000 currently has 22 locations that accept cryptocurrency as payment, including the Free State Bitcoin Shoppe that attracts customers from the high traffic tourist area and helps them open their first cryptocurrency wallet.

Dash Digital Cash has 18 Dash accepting locations in Portsmouth and 42 across the state of New Hampshire. A strong and active Dash micro-economy is thriving in Portsmouth and across the state of New Hampshire.

Unfortunately, CNN failed to fully explain the scope of what’s happening in Portsmouth and with individuals like Valenzuela. The CNN segment made it sound as though cryptocurrencies like Dash only hold value within the Portsmouth micro-economy.

This is far from the truth. What the mainstream media fails to understand is Portsmouth is just the beginning of cryptocurrencies, like the massive adoption of Dash.

Because unlike local currencies such as “berkshares” and “equal dollars” which only hold value within their communities, cryptocurrencies like dash hold value across the globe.

Dash Spotlight: Two-Tier Network for Decentralization

Welcome our Truth in Media Sponsor Spotlight on Dash Digital Cash.

Dash Digital Cash is the exclusive sponsor of Reality Check and the Truth In Media project.

In our last Dash Spotlight, we explained how the Dash Treasury funds projects like Reality Check and Truth In Media to support the growth of Dash use and facilitate innovation in various industries.

But how is the Dash Treasury funded, and who manages those funds?
It all starts with miners, or Dash nodes, and Dash masternodes.

Like other crypto miners, Dash nodes solve complex math problems using specialized computers. When a problem is solved, a new block is added to the blockchain and the miner is rewarded Dash Digital Cash.

What’s different about Dash compared to other cryptos is its two-tier network.

This is where Dash masternodes come into play. Masternodes enable financial privacy and the decentralized governance of the Dash budget.

So miners power the first tier and masternodes power the second tier. And for powering that second tier, masternodes are rewarded.

In the last episode, we explained the budget breakdown: with each new Dash mined, 45% of the reward goes to miners, 45% goes to masternodes, and 10% goes to the treasury. The treasury is what funds projects like Reality Check and Truth In Media.

Dash is the first-ever crypto to set up this type of two-tier system, making the features implemented by masternodes unique in the crypto world.

And that’s why the growth of Dash is so vital in decentralization.

Masternodes are focused on ensuring anonymous and instant transactions, but also governance through monthly budgeting and voting.

Dash Spotlight: How Dash Operates As a Money-As-A-Service Business

Welcome our Truth in Media spotlight on Dash Digital Cash.

Dash Digital Cash is the exclusive sponsor of Reality Check and the Truth In Media project.

In the first Dash Spotlight, I reiterated that Dash is a revolutionary cryptocurrency that will change the game for everyone.

So how is Dash Digital Cash revolutionary? Well, Dash Digital Cash operates as a money-as-a-service business. This is what separates it from other cryptocurrencies built on the blockchain.

Dash is run by a decentralized, autonomous community of people from around the globe. To operate as a money-as-a-service business, members of the Dash community decide on projects to fund that will increase the use of Dash, and make a difference in the world.

Here’s how it works: instead of other blockchain based networks giving 100% of each new crypto coin to miners, Dash Digital Cash divides its block reward, or unit of Dash, into three different parts:

45% goes to the Dash miners, or nodes, 45% goes to masternodes, and 10% goes to the treasury.

We’ll explain nodes and master nodes in the next Sponsor Spotlight. For now, let’s focus on the treasury.

The Dash Treasury is a pool of Dash Digital Cash allocated to support the growth of Dash, fund independent media, like Reality Check and Truth In Media, and help facilitate innovation in different industries that can solve big problems.
