Oklahoma police are accused of killing 44-year-old Luis Rodriguez in a movie theater parking lot after responding to a domestic disturbance call. Part of the incident was caught on camera.
When police initially showed up on the scene, Rodriguez’s wife, Nair, admitted that she slapped their 19-year-old daughter in the face. Her husband, however, had nothing to do with the dispute and had done nothing wrong. But officers insisted on questioning him anyways. The 44-year-old would apparently not cooperate with officers, which led to them handcuffing and retraining the man.
It is not entirely clear what transpired during the restraining process.
Sometime subsequent, Nair began filming the incident. It is unclear if her husband was already dead when the recording started, or not.
Several officers can be seen pinning Rodriguez’s face to the ground and holding his body down. Despite that fact that he was not moving or attempting to resist, the cops kept Rodriguez pinned to the ground until an ambulance showed up at the scene.
Finally, Nair realized that her husband was dead. She screamed, “You killed my husband!” and began to sob.
Rodriguez’s death is currently being looked into by investigators. The autopsy, which will certainly shed more light on the case, has not yet been released.
Nair claims that cops beat up her husband, but the footage she took does not show that. Homicide investigator Kyle Eastridge said that the cops did not demonstrate excessive force in the video. He said, “This is pretty benign as far as police procedure goes. Everything is textbook. I don’t know what happened before.” This means the case will likely “come down to what does the medical examiner’s report say.”
An attorney representing the Rodriguez family said in a statement, “Taking him face down onto the pavement, pepper-spraying his mouth, nose and eyes and putting the weight of five grown men on top of him, and then handcuffing him as he was unconscious or already dead.”
Three of the officers involved have been placed on leave.
