Arizona’s Country Day School in Scottsdale threatened to suspend an eight-year-old student after he drew a picture of a soldier with a gun, a ninja with a gun, and a Star Wars character holding laser guns.
The child, who has not been named, drew the pictures as ideas for a Halloween costume.
Here are the drawings:
The child’s parents are furious with the school for threatening suspension. The father, Jeff, whose last name has not been released for the safety of his children, said the school “bullied” his son and “bullied the parents too.”
Jeff said, “In this situation, it’s actually the principal of the school who bullied the parents – so much that we couldn’t even be safe in that environment. I think we really send our children the wrong message when we show that, as adults, we’re so afraid of our shadow that an innocent picture – that any 8-year-old might’ve drawn – is cause for this kind of concern.”
The headmaster of the school called the pictures “highly disturbing” and said that he “couldn’t guarantee the safety of other student’s with [the eight-year-old] around.”
Jeff thinks this is ridiculous. He said, “I don’t understand how somebody can say that about an 8-year-old that has no history of violence, no history of making threats – nothing at all.”
The headmaster also pointed to boy’s journal to express the school’s “concern.” He said the school was particularly concerned over the boy’s use of “booby traps” and “shooting gadgets like a rope gun” in his journal passages.
