Michelle Obama tells African-Americans to vote straight ticket Democrat no matter what

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 4, 2014 –  On Tuesday, in an interview with TV One, First Lady Michelle Obama said that African-Americans should vote straight Democratic party ticket regardless of who was on the ballot or what stances the candidate held. The interview took place on the network’s “NewOne Now” program with host Roland Martin.

The First Lady stated, “That’s my message to voters. This isn’t about Barack. It’s not about the person on that ballot. It’s about you, and for most of the people we are talking to a Democratic ticket is the clear ticket that we should be voting on regardless of who said what or did this. That shouldn’t even come into the equation.”

The Democratic party is facing a most-likely defeat in the Senate this election cycle, and has focused heavily on mobilizing African-American voters for Tuesday’s election in a Hail Mary attempt to maintain control of Congress.

Obama went on to state, “Voting is critical no matter who’s on the ballot. And that’s one of the things we have to continuously work on in our communities of new voters, folks who maybe voted for the first time because they voted for Barack Obama, young people who voted for the first time because they were inspired by this president.”

The statements by Obama on the cable channel program, geared towards attracting an African-American demographic, embody claims levied by multiple members of the Republican party against Democrats in recent weeks, accusing the democratic party of playing the race card leading up to the 2014 midterm elections.

Democratic candidates in the south have reportedly gone as far as using images of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown in recent campaign ads to invoke memories of Jim Crow-era segregation and play up fears of intimidation, repression and inequality in an effort to blame these issues on the Republican party.

According to a recent article by The New York Times, Democrats across the country, and especially those locked in tight Senate races throughout the south, have heavily relied on racially charged campaign messages to mobilize their base and increase favorability with potential minority voters.

Republicans have frequently accused Democrats of being unable to run on their own merit and party platforms this election cycle; and have repeatedly pointed out the tendency of Democratic candidates to rely on racially charged, unjust fear-mongering tactics in their campaigns.

Controversy Erupts Over Viral Photo of Paltry-Portioned, Federally-Mandated School Lunch

The above photo of a skimpy, federally-mandated school lunch was taken by 17-year-old Chickasha, OK student Kaytlin Shelton, who complained that the paltry portions typically served at school contain insufficient calories. Considering the fact that she is pregnant and expecting a child, the one-size-fits-all school lunch regulations that were passed under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, a statute endorsed by First Lady Michelle Obama and aimed at combating childhood obesity, are failing to meet her nutritional needs. The photo has since gone viral, inspiring outrage among parents and forcing the school system’s superintendent to weigh in on the issue.

According to KOKH-TV, Chickasha Public Schools Superintendent David Cash blames new federal school lunch regulations for the school system’s calorie-restricted meals, which he said are forcing kids to go hungry, “You’ve got in some cases little kids that their only two meals are breakfast and lunch at school and they’re getting you know a grand total of 1100 calories. That’s not enough.” The Daily Caller notes that, under the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act, school districts that accept federal dollars for school lunches must provide meals like the one pictured above with limited amounts of fat, sugar, sodium, and calories.

Oklahoma Assistant Superintendent for Child Nutrition Joanie Hildenbrand indicated that the age-based calorie caps built into the new law have frustrated officials. She told KOKH-TV, “We have a meat-meat alternate, we have a bread grain, we have vegetable… it’s the student’s choice of what they want to take.” However, the calorie limits cause extreme caloric deficits when kids choose not to eat some of the items on the already-restricted plate. Hildenbrand said, “These regulations were put into effect two years ago and we’re still struggling with them.”

Superintendent Cash acknowledged that the calorie caps leave many kids hungry. He said, “I know they are [hungry]… there is no doubt about that. My own kid comes home and the first thing he does is raid the refrigerator.” The law’s calorie restrictions have also been criticized for failing to meet the needs of poor kids who get most of their food from school lunches and athletes who need higher caloric intakes to meet their nutritional needs.

The regulations only apply to school systems that receive federal funding through the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act. The Daily Caller‘s education editor Eric Owens wrote, “Some school districts — particularly wealthier ones — have opted out of the healthy-lunch regime and the federal dollars that come with it.” As an example, USA Today reported back in August of 2014 that a local school district in Fort Thomas, KY ended its participation in the program after kids refused to eat the provided meals. Fort Thomas Superintendent Gene Kirchner, said, “The calorie limitations and types of foods that have to be provided … have resulted in the kids just saying ‘I’m not going to eat that.'”

Federal Bake Sale Ban Set to Hit Schools This Fall

For decades, underfunded programs within schools have relied on bake sales to raise money. Traditionally, popular items like homemade cupcakes, cookies, and other sweets have generated heaps of revenue, funding school clubs, sports teams’ uniforms, and other academic essentials. However, The Wall Street Journal is reporting on new federal regulations, set to take effect this fall in many US states, that would so seriously limit bake sales as to render them ineffective, unprofitable, and pointless in most cases.

The regulations, which were passed into law as a part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 that emerged from Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative, compel schools to restrict food choices according to federal nutritional standards. However, these new rules do not just affect the lunch room. Food carts, vending machines, and bake sales must also meet strict nutritional requirements that essentially prohibit the majority of items typically sold through them. The new rules also restrict the frequency with which school programs can raise money by selling foodstuffs. In an effort to get ready for the law, some school systems have already banned the sale of Girl Scout cookies on campus.

Basically, all food items sold on school grounds must meet a wide array of nutritional standards including limits on calorie, sodium, sugar, and fat content. Fun foods that people like to purchase at bake sales like cookies, cakes, doughnuts, and candy bars will not meet requirements, leaving school clubs to rely on less-popular choices like fruit cups and rice cakes when raising funds. The regulations also limit the sale of foods that do not feature labels identifying nutritional content, which will effectively ban homemade items. This is causing some school districts to favor processed foods instead. According to The Wall Street Journal, president-elect Keli Gill of the Alabama Parent Teacher Association said, “We use prepackaged food because it has to have nutritional requirements posted. Items like apples are perishable and don’t last as long, so we don’t want to waste money and have it go bad on us.”

Under the law, states are allowed to claim an exemption establishing a limited number of days each year during which unregulated bake sale fundraisers can take place. 32 states, however, have yet to do so, meaning, unless policies are changed, schools in those states will not be allowed to have them at all. Though the above-embedded video coverage by HLN claims that only 12 states will be enacting these new rules in the fall, it is likely that the network was erroneously referring to the 12 states that have already enacted their own restrictions on bake sales in the past, which are already in effect. Tennessee, an example of a state that has claimed an exemption, opted to implement a policy whereby schools can allow the sale of food for fundraisers on 30 days out of the year. David Sevier, deputy executive director of the Tennessee State Board of Education, described to The Tennessean how the policy will work, “That means if the Spanish club sells sausage biscuits one morning, that’s one day. If there’s a schoolwide event where all the teachers cook hamburgers for the seniors, then that’s a day… If it’s 10 kids or 1,000 kids, it’s still counting as one of those events.”

According to Tennessee Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman, “I have a daughter in high school who’s actually experienced this. There are quite a lot of bake sales and so on. And so if you’re a principal, you have to basically declare Tuesday ‘Bake Sale Day’ [for all clubs] — otherwise you’re almost certain to go over.” Some sports teams currently rely on weekly bake sales for funding.

Schools who are found in violation of the new rules could face thousands in fines. Said David Sevier, “Schools have relied on these types of sales as revenue streams for sports, cheering clubs, marching bands. We get the obesity issue, but we don’t want to jerk this out from under the kids.” The New York Times noted, back in 2010, that cafeteria menus designed to meet these new regulations have been widely rejected by students, meaning it is unlikely that fundraising efforts selling healthier products will generate similar revenues. David Sevier also told The Tennessean, “If I thought I could generate revenue selling carrot sticks, I could tear it up.”

The Pleasure Police Strikes Again! Washington State School District Bans Cupcakes

Parents, remember birthday treats? The cupcakes and cookies you indulged in to celebrate a classmate’s birthday. Well, they’re now a distant memory like Aquanet hairspray and acid-washed blue jeans for the children in one school district in Washington state.

According to the Washington Times, the Wellness Committee of Edmonds School District, outside Seattle, stated in its guide to schools that classroom birthday parties may be celebrated with non-food treats only.

Food treats can be eaten in the classroom three times per year.

Apparently, the State now has to regulate cupcake intake.

A spokesman for the school district told the media it’s not healthy for a cupcake party to be thrown for every student on their birthday, according to Fox 6.

Apparently, the district was inspired by the First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move program.

“We’re not just talking about one cupcake a year, we’re talking about 25 cupcakes a year,” said DJ Jakala, spokeswoman for the Edmonds School District.

Not everyone is excited for the discontinuation of birthday treats though.

“It’s not necessarily the district’s job to control that, to take away from everybody, it’s overreaching,” parent Marcus Shelton said.

First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” anti-obesity campaign and her disciples apparently believe that sugar is the new “crack cocaine.”

Last year, MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski blasted soda makers saying, ‘It’s killing our children. It’s liquid sugar and sugar is poison.”

Has the pleasure police gone too far by banning cupcakes from the classroom? Please comment below.

Michelle Obama Bans Media Questions During China Trip

“The most transparent administration in history” isn’t being so transparent about Michelle Obama’s taxpayer-funded China trip.

Michelle Obama, her two kids, her mother, and numerous aides embarked on the trip today–they will not return to the U.S. until March 26. White House officials refuse to tell U.S. taxpayers how much they will shell out for the trip, likely due to inevitable media scrutiny. Simultaneously, the First Lady has banned any questions from media while she is on the China tour. It is unclear at this time if the prohibition of applies to just American journalists, or Chinese reporters as well.

Because the media is not allowed to report on what happens during the China trip, taxpayers are left with no idea as to what they are subsidizing.

Major media outlets received an email informing them of the ban. The subject of the email was “‘FOR PLANNING PURPOSES ONLY / NOT FOR REPORTING,” and said there will only be two events in China that are completely open to press. During those two appearances, which are described as having “limited space,” Michelle Obama will not take any questions whatsoever.

One media outlet that received the email, The Daily Mail, reported, “Although she will make a few speeches with reporters in the room, the picture is largely one of an expensive, taxpayer-funded tourism exercise for Mrs. Obama, her two daughters, and her mother – not the official trip the White House has projected.”

The Chinese trip will undeniably be expensive. But Ben Rhodes, the White House’s deputy national security adviser for strategic communications, insisted that the price tag is well worth it. He said, “The most powerful message we can deliver [to Chinese people] is one of the examples of not just the First Lady’s life story but of America and our values. That alone I think speaks to things like respect for human rights that are interwoven into the DNA of the United States of America.”

If the intended purpose of the trip is to affect relations with China, as White House spokespeople like Rhodes are conveying, the media ban is especially puzzling.

Michelle Obama’s top aide, Tina Tchen, will be joining on the trip. She said, “We are not discussing or disclosing information regarding the details of the logistics of the trip.”

Still, the aide did not try to conceal her excitement. She said, “I think we are all, here in the First Lady’s office, quite excited about the upcoming trip… I think the First Lady is very much looking forward to it.”

While in the country, the First Lady and her travel partners will visit numerous cities including Beijing.

Michelle Obama has come under fire in the past for taking expensive, tax-payer funded vacations. Major trips included her $487,000 tour of Spain and a $424,142 stay in Africa.

White House Refuses To Disclose Cost Of Michelle Obama’s Taxpayer-Funded China Trip

Michelle Obama, her two kids, her mother, and numerous aides will enjoy a taxpayer-funded trip to China from March 19 to March 26. White House officials refuse to tell U.S. taxpayers how much they will shell out for the trip, likely due to inevitable media scrutiny.

That alone I think speaks to things like respect for human rights that are interwoven into the DNA of the United States of America… The First Lady’s story itself sends a powerful message about the ability of someone of a disadvantaged economic background from a minority group to ascend to the position that she did in private life and now as First Lady.”

He added, “Everywhere that [Michelle] has traveled independently, she has had a tremendous reception and has been able to connect with audiences from Asia to Africa to the Americas… We have differences with China on a host of issues, so it’s a relationship that allows for both a constructive cooperation, and candor when we disagree.”

It is still unclear, however, why China was chosen for the First Lady’s most recent vacation. There are plenty of other countries that are arguably more important to travel to in the short term. At this time, only 110,000 U.S. citizens are living in China.

Michelle Obama Enlists Subway In Her Federally Funded “Let’s Move!” Initiative

article-2544947-1AE9922800000578-22_634x390

Subway is Michelle Obama’s new partner in her “Let’s Move!” healthy eating initiative.

The Star Tribune reported, “The first lady was expected to announce Thursday that the Subway sandwich chain will spend $41 million over three years to encourage finicky young eaters to eat more food that comes out of the ground or grows on trees. The announcement was being made at a Subway shop near the White House. Subway will only offer a kids’ menu that mirrors federal standards for school lunches. That includes offering apples on the side and low-fat or nonfat plain milk or water as a default beverage.”

The First Lady said, “Every single item on the kids’ menu meets the highest nutrition standards.”

At this time, it is unknown how much tax payer money will go towards this new campaign.

Critics argue that this is yet another example of government attempting to pick winners and losers in the “free market” — Subway will most certainly benefit from being backed by the federally subsidized “Let’s Move!” campaign. Having one of the country’s most prominent faces featured on the fast food chain’s products will likely increase Subway’s sales and PR while harming competitors.

Of course, Subway is admirable for offering healthy food options to consumers. But is the playing field really level when the government is hand picking sponsors for PR campaigns?

You’re Footing The Bill For Michelle Obama’s Extravagant Hawaii Vacation

Michelle Obama Calls Children on Christmas Eve

President Barack Obama and his two daughters recently left Hawaii after Christmas break, but First Lady Michelle Obama stayed put in paradise as an early birthday present from her husband. Michelle turns 50-years-old on January 17.

But Obama’s present is really a present from all of us — when the President committed to the Hawaii birthday “gift,” he also committed to U.S. citizens footing the bill, which the Daily Mail reports will be hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The First Lady will be spending her trip at Oprah Winfrey’s vacation pad. The cost of “airtight [security] with SWAT teams and just about every other resource securing wide perimeters around Michelle” will be anything but cheap.

When her trip concludes, Michelle will fly back to D.C on a private government plane. A former Secret Service agent told the Daily Mail, “The flight itself wouldn’t be a small passenger jet. It would be a larger military aircraft with room in its hold for cars and SUVs, vehicles that otherwise would have come back with the rest of the family.”

Add in the cost of extra security, transportation, and Secret Service personnel (who will all be put up in Hawaii hotels) and you have one expensive vacation on your hands.

During a recent press conference Fox News’ Ed Henry asked Jay Carney who will be paying for the vacation.

Carney responded, “In line with past presidents and first ladies, the First Lady will travel via government aircraft, but you are accurate in your description that this was – her decision to remain in Hawaii – the president’s suggestion that she remain in Hawaii to spend time with friends ahead of this very big birthday. If you have kids, you know that telling your spouse they can spend a week away from home is a big present. Not that we don’t love our kids.”

At a time when most Americans cannot afford a modest vacation for their own families, many believe it is disrespectful and irresponsible for the First Lady to be enjoying an extravagant vacation on our dime.

A lavish Hawaii vacation is a generous birthday present. Hopefully Michelle will remember to say “thank you” — to us, that is.
