Exclusive: Congressman Says Obama Strike Against Syria Would Be “Morally Wrong” (Video)

The war drums are pounding and President Barack Obama is each day closer to taking military action against the Syrian government.  There are major questions about why the U.S. would become involved in Syria and whether or not the claim that the Assad regime used chemical weapons on citizens living in a Damascus suburb are based in fact.  Administration officials say that military action against Syria would be done “not to create a regime change” but some members of Congress aren’t buying it.

“If its not an effort to exact regime change then what is it?  Is it just retaliation? Is it bullying? Is it showing everybody in the world that we have missiles and we can fire them into your country because we don’t like what we see?” asks Republican Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie.

Congressman Massie talked exclusively with BenSwann.com about the push by the Obama Administration to draw the U.S. into war with Syria.

“When you deliver missiles into somebody’s country, that is an act of war.  We can argue about whether having economic sanctions are an act of war.  But clearly when you deliver missiles, if somebody delivered missiles into the central United States or anywhere on American territory that would be an act of war.”

Massie went on to talk about the claims made by Secretary of State John Kerry that there is “no doubt” that the President Bashar al Assad ordered the use of chemical weapons a week ago.  Massie says the evidence is not clear at all.

“We don’t have proof of who used the weapons, or who used the gas.  And it is also not clear to me how you improve the situation where chemical weapons were used by delivering kinetic weapons. If we send in airstrikes or missiles from ships, it is not clear to me how killing more people is going to improve the situation.”

So, who has the authority to the hold the administration accountable?  The Congress of the United States.  It is Congress and Congress alone that has the authority to authorize an act of war against another nation.  Back in June, Rep. Massie authored a bill titled the “War Power Protection Act of 2013”.  At the time, he had 8 co-sponsors but that number has now risen to 13.  Rep. Massie says it is time for Congress to quit abdicating its responsibility on this matter and  instead enforce its Constitutional authority to authorize or deny military involvement in Syria.

“There will be civilian causalities in any conflict.  If we get involved we are going to cause civilian causalities and I think that is wrong when our interests are not clear.  It is morally wrong.  And this is a country by the way (Syria) that has not expressed aggression toward the United States at this point.  And as you pointed out, we are not in a situation where there is an imminent threat to our well being.” Massie stated.

The Congressman was referring to the 1973 War Powers Act which allows for the President to act without Congressional approval for 30 days.  Where that act has been misrepresented by lawmakers and media is that the Act only allows the President to do so if the United States is under threat of imminent attack.  Congressman Massie’s bill, in addition to preventing the President from entering a war without Congressional approval,  also blocks the U.S. from providing aid to the rebels in Syria.

“The bill itself deals with military or para-military purposes.  Obviously if we wanted to provide humanitarian aid, my bill would not prevent it.” says Massie.

As to the question of whether or not a strike against Syria could lead to an impeachment of the President, Massie says that is doubtful.

“People have asked me would you bring impeachment proceedings against the President? The harsh fact of the matter is that there aren’t enough votes in the Senate to affect an impeachment of the President.  It requires a 2/3rds vote of the Senate and before you get the process started, it requires a majority of the members on the judiciary committee.” explains Massie, who goes on to say,

“People should encourage their Congressman to support my bill, its HR 2507.  It’s called the “War Powers Protection Act.”  We only have 13 brave souls in Congress who are co-sponsoring this bill and it basically says that the President cannot intervene in Syria until he comes to Congress, its that simple.”

Of course, the role of Congress is not to sit back and do nothing while missiles are fired at another nation and then attempt to punish the President afterward.  The job of Congress is to stand up before military action is taken. Rep. Massie warns the American people as well to watch out for language being used, even by House leadership when they say that the President must first “consult” with Congress.

“Our leadership in the House of Representatives says that the President should consult with Congress.  Our leadership is not asking them to come and get permission and I think that the Administration needs to come and get permission.  And they can’t just come and talk to three or four members on the Foreign Affairs Committee or the Military Committee or just the leadership.  They need to ask the entire body in the House of Representatives and in the Senate for authorization or for a declaration of war before he can proceed.”

Has Obama Let The Black Community Down?

When President Obama won his election in 2008 many thought it signaled a change.  People were inspired across the globe. America had just elected its first non-Caucasian president. At Obama’s inauguration cameras fixated on the tears streaming down the faces of African American men and women.Obama

Perhaps Obama was going to inspire a new generation of minorities to break through the modern day psycho-social chains that bind them to poverty and crime. Perhaps Obama was going to be a catalyst for true change in our culture. It’s been 5 years and these are the headlines of today:

-On September 28th, 2012, Anthony Lee, 18, fired on a group of people in St. Louis. He shot a 13-year-old and a 17-year-old. Lee was an active member in a street gang named “Obama Boyz“. Lee was charged with 10 felony counts of first-degree assault, armed criminal action and firing shots from a vehicle.

-On August 11, 2013, Regina Young posted a video to her account of a young African American boy praying to Barack Obama as if he was God.

-Under President Obama, black unemployment has returned to twice that of white unemployment. A trend that decreased during the Bush years has now been returned under Obama.

-Welfare has skyrocketed under Obama. According to Pew research, 31% of African Americans have received food stamps. They represent the highest percentage per demographic. That is more than two times higher than whites at 15%.

With welfare skyrocketing, black unemployment returning to two times that of white, street gangs shooting innocent victims in inspiration of Obama and children being encouraged to pray to Obama as if he were a false prophet is the black community getting the wrong message from Obama?

Rep Duncan, Wilson, Gowdy Signs Petition Asking Obama to Consult Congress First Before Striking Syria

Republican lawmakers signed a letter penned by Rep. Scott Rigell (R-Va) to send to President Obama regarding military action against Syria.

According to the Washington Post, lawmakers signed this letter yesterday and will deliver it today at noon:

Dear Mr. President,

We strongly urge you to consult and receive authorization from Congress before ordering the use of U.S. military force in Syria.  Your responsibility to do so is prescribed in the Constitution and the War Powers Resolution of 1973.

While the Founders wisely gave the Office of the President the authority to act in emergencies, they foresaw the need to ensure public debate – and the active engagement of Congress – prior to committing U.S. military assets. Engaging our military in Syria when no direct threat to the United States exists and without prior congressional authorization would violate the separation of powers that is clearly delineated in the Constitution.

Mr. President, in the case of military operations in Libya you stated that authorization from Congress was not required because our military was not engaged in “hostilities.”  In addition, an April 1, 2011, memorandum to you from your Office of Legal Counsel concluded:

“…President Obama could rely on his constitutional power to safeguard the national interest by directing the anticipated military operations in Libya—which were limited in their nature, scope, and duration—without prior congressional authorization.”

We view the precedent this opinion sets, where “national interest” is enough to engage in hostilities without congressional authorization, as unconstitutional.  If the use of 221 Tomahawk cruise missiles, 704 Joint Direct Attack Munitions, and 42 Predator Hellfire missiles expended in Libya does not constitute “hostilities,” what does?

If you deem that military action in Syria is necessary, Congress can reconvene at your request.  We stand ready to come back into session, consider the facts before us, and share the burden of decisions made regarding U.S. involvement in the quickly escalating Syrian conflict.

Sincerely,

Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Tex.)

Rep. Scott Rigell (VA-02)

Rep. Matt Salmon (AZ-5)

Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL)

Rep. Scott Garrett (NJ-05)

Rep. Tom McClintock (CA-04)

Rep. Tom Marino (PA-10)

Rep. Dan Benishek, M.D (MI-01)

Rep. Tom Rooney (FL-17)

Rep. Steve Pearce (NM-02)

Rep. Tim Griffin (AR-2)

Rep Justin Amash (MI-03)

Rep. Raul Labrabor (ID-01)

Rep. Joseph Pitts (PA-16)

Rep. Trent Franks (AZ-8)

Rep. John Campbell (CA-45)

Rep. Paul Gosar (AZ-04)

Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (GA-03)

Rep. Jeff Duncan (SC-03)

Rep. Joe Wilson (SC-02)

Rep. Trey Gowdy (SC-04)

Rep. Charles Boustany (LA-03)

Rep. Tom Cole (OK-04)

These leaders are asking president Obama to honor the Constitution, in addition to the War Powers Resolution, and seek congressional approval before launching a military offensive on Syria.

Exclusive Interview: Two Men Arrested & Detained While Protesting Obama

A recent grassroots movement for Congress to bring upon impeachment against President Obama has been gaining traction. A movement called “Overpasses for Obama’s Impeachment” began in July and has grown to include activists in all 50 states. This past Saturday at one of the group’s rallies in Missouri one prominent online blogger was arrested.

Dr. Weed Being Arrested
Dr. Weed Being Arrested

Dr. Duane Weed  (better known as Survival Doc online) was arrested and detained for 24 hours after protesting in support of Obama’s impeachment. Dr. Weed’s friend Marc Messmer was also arrested and detained. In our exclusive interview with Dr. Weed it seems that the police may have been playing judge, jury and executioner.

Dr. Weed tells us that upon arrival to the overpass where they were planning the protest multiple wrecks had already been occurring at the off-ramp a couple hundred yards away from their protest site. “That day the city hosted the biggest festival of the year. There were wrecks all over the place,” says Dr. Weed. When Dr. Weed arrived on site there were no police anywhere near the protest location. The other protesters arrived shortly after and they began their planned activities.

Soon after another wreck occurred and traffic began to back up on the interstate below and throughout the off-ramp. Moments later the police arrived. “At one point there were more cops than protesters,” says Dr. Weed. He adds, “It was clear they were there to show force and make us leave.”

The police approached the protesters and told them they needed to leave because of the accidents. “I asked the police if anyone had been injured in the accident and they said no- just a minor fender bender,” says Dr. Weed. He goes on to say that there is a clear violation of the First Amendment here. Dr. Weed says, “You know, we have a right to protest. The Constitution doesn’t say where, or how it must be done.” When asked if he felt that they possibly caused the wreck below on the interstate he responded,

Absolutely not. A driver is responsible for maintaining their car. If I am driving down the road and a woman in skinny, red jeans walks by causing me to be distracted and wreck into someone are the cops going to arrest the woman and throw her in jail for causing a distraction? I don’t think so. Regardless, the cops never even said we were the cause of the wreck

Trying to compromise with the police, Dr. Weed asked if they could simply move to the other side of the overpass so that there would be no possible interference with those using the exit ramp. The cops refused. Dr. Weed says that he then asked the cops under what ordinance or state law were they referencing by saying that they had to leave their protest site. The cops could not cite any state law or ordinance. Dr. Weed says that at one point a cop gestured to his badge and uniform and insinuated that he was the authority and law, so therefore the protesters had to do what he said.

The cops, unwilling to compromise, asked if the protesters were refusing to leave. The protesters said they would not leave (since they had broken no laws), and the arrests subsequently began.

Messmer was arrested first, followed by Dr. Weed. “They put both of us in handcuffs and sat us down behind the exhaust of the patrol car,” he says. Dr. Weed asked two separate troopers to move them away from the exhaust because it was poisonous and causing them to be sick. According to Dr. Weed, one officer responded, “Make sure you lean over then so you don’t vomit on yourself.” Dr. Weed says that they had to ask three separate times before a third officer (1/2 an hour later) would finally move them away from the exhaust.

They were then taken to jail. “They took our fingerprints, mugshots and threw us into a cell for 24 hours,” says Dr. Weed. They were released the next day. However, there were no charges, paperwork or fines to be paid. “I was confused by this,” says Dr. Weed. He then called the court, state highway patrol and other agencies to see what the deal was. The court only told him that there may be a possible summons mailed out to them in a few weeks, but there were no charges or fines. Dr. Weed says, “I don’t understand how they could arrest us for a  peaceful protest and throw us in jail for 24 hours without charging us for breaking any law.”

Dr. Weed tells us:

I see this type of abuse on videos all the time. I believe that most police are well meaning. However, it seems that there is a growing number of them who are infringing on our rights. We have had a lot of attention from this incident, we don’t want money or anything of that sort. We just want Americans to see this and call attention to it. Police must realize that this is not acceptable in America.

Did the police simply decide to play judge, jury and executioner by placing Dr. Weed and Marc Messmer in jail for 24 hours for disobeying their orders even though they had broken no law? If they had broken a law warranting their arrest, shouldn’t all of the protesters be arrested instead of the two men alone?

McCain & Graham Stand With Rand: “End Aid To Egypt”

Even a broken clock is right twice a day, and perhaps just in time. US senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has been calling for an end to foreign aid to Egypt and Syria for quite some time. Just recently the Senate voted 86-13 against Paul’s most recent attempt to end aid to Egypt. Graham and McCain both voting against Paul. “It would be a terrific mistake for the United States to send a message to Egypt: you’re on your own,” McCain said on the Senate floor. “I urge my colleagues to vote to table the Paul amendment.”paul_graham_mccain

In response to the Senate voting against his amendment Paul said, “This is something that those who voted in Congress are going to have to live with. The question is: How does their conscience feel now as they see photographs of tanks rolling over Egyptian civilians?”

Due to more than 650 deaths in Egypt over the past few days, Obama recently canceled a joint military exercise and delayed sending new military equipment to Egypt. Finally, it seems that the two senior senators have had a recent change of heart just days after voting against Paul’s efforts to end aid to Egypt.

In a joint statement, senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) now “standing with Rand” by calling for an end to foreign aid in Egypt:

“The interim civilian government and security forces – backed up, unfortunately, by the military – are taking Egypt down a dark path, one that the United States cannot and should not travel with them.”

McCain and Graham continue,

“We cannot be complicit in the mass slaughter of civilians. We urge the Obama Administration to suspend U.S. assistance to Egypt and make clear to the current leadership of the country what steps we believe are necessary to halt Egypt’s descent into civil conflict and ultimately to restore our assistance relationship, which has historically served U.S. national security interests.”

It is not immediately clear how far McCain and Graham are willing to go in order to end aid to Egypt. However, should Paul bring his amendment back for a similar vote, he may for the first time have McCain and Graham on his side.

Obama Was Playing Cards During Bin Laden Raid, Says Top Aid

Obama’s “Body Man” and personal aid, Reggie Love, claimed that Obama was playing cards with him during the bin Laden raid.

He made this bold claim during a forum in Los Angeles during May 2011. Love was invited to the forum to speak about his experiences as Obama’s aid.

“We must have played 15 rounds,” said Love.

His statement comes as a shock to many.

Obama has always maintained that he watched the raid in the Situation Room in real time. There is a photo that appears to be Obama with his national security team watching the raid. The president said, “This was the longest 40 minutes of my life,” speaking of the Navy SEALs’ efforts after entering bin Laden’s compound.

But Love tells a different story. He said, “Most people were like down in the Situation Room and President Obama was like, ‘I’m not going to be down there, I can’t watch this entire thing.'”

It is unclear which parts of the Situation Room activities Obama skipped out on.

32-year-old Love was Obama’s longtime assistant and close friend. While he was on the campaign trail in 2008, he said, “If we’re not at a campaign event, no politics talk.”

Love left the White House in 2011 to complete his MBA at the University of Pennsylvania.

OBAMACARE PROVISION: “FORCED” HOME INSPECTIONS

“Clearly, any family may be visited by federally paid agents for almost any reason.”

According to an Obamacare provision millions of Americans will be targeted.

The Health and Human Services’ website states that your family will be targeted if you fall under the “high-risk” categories below:

  • Families where mom is not yet 21.
  • Families where someone is a tobacco user.
  • Families where children have low student achievement, developmental delays, or disabilities.
  • Families with individuals who are serving or formerly served in the armed forces, including such families that have members of the armed forces who have had multiple deployments outside the United States.

There is no reference to Medicaid being the determinant for a family to be “eligible.”

In 2011, the HHS announced $224 million will be given to support evidence-based home visiting programs to “help parents and children.” Individuals from the state will implement these leveraging strategies to “enhance program sustainability.”

Constitutional attorney and author Kent Masterson Brown states,

“This is not a “voluntary” program. The eligible entity receiving the grant for performing the home visits is to identify the individuals to be visited and intervene so as to meet the improvement benchmarks. A homeschooling family, for instance, may be subject to “intervention” in “school readiness” and “social-emotional developmental indicators.” A farm family may be subject to “intervention” in order to “prevent child injuries.” The sky is the limit.

Although the Obama administration would claim the provision applies only to Medicaid families, the new statute, by its own definition, has no such limitation. Intervention may be with any family for any reason. It may also result in the child or children being required to go to certain schools or taking certain medications and vaccines and even having more limited – or no – interaction with parents. The federal government will now set the standards for raising children and will enforce them by home visits.”

Part of the program will require massive data collecting of private information including all sources of income and the amount gathered from each source.

A manual called Child Neglect: A Guide for Prevention, Assessment, and Intervention includes firearms as potential safety hazard  and will require inspectors to verify safety compliance and record each inspection into a database.

Last session South Carolina Rep. Bill Chumley introduced a bill, H.3101 that would nullify certain provisions of Obamacare. The bill would give the state attorney general the authority to authorize law enforcement to arrest federal agents for trespassing. It would make forced home inspections under Obamacare illegal in South Carolina. It passed in the House but died in the senate.

Kent Brown and Rep. Rick Quinn discuss “forced” home inspections under Obamacare in the video below.

Christie Spends $4.7M In Sandy Relief Funds On Pseudo Campaign Ads Featuring Himself

Perhaps no man has fallen from the grace of the GOP faster than NJ Governor Chris Christie.

Tensions have been mounting between the Christie and the GOP. At this year’s CPAC Convention, which hosts some of the greatest names in the conservative party Christie was denied entrance. Christie struck a sour note with conservatives for palling up with Obama during Hurricane Sandy. The bill to send money to victims was full of pork, and republicans wanted to make sure that the money was only going to the victims- not special interests. Christie attacked them for it.chris-christie-and-obama

US senator Rand Paul (R-KY) said that Christie needed to “cool it” with the tantrums. Christie fired back and said that Paul was bringing too much pork home from Washington. Paul countered, calling Christie “The King of Bacon“. It seems the King of Bacon may have just provided warrant for Paul’s claim.

According to a report in the Asbury Park Press, a new ad campaign dubbed “Stronger Than The Storm” stars Christie and his family. The ad campaign is costing taxpayers almost $5 million. The price tag comes in $2 million higher than a bid denied by the Governor’s administration from a competing firm. The ads are part of a $25 million dollar state tourism fund given to New Jersey in the Sandy relief bill.

“The contract documents shine new light on the role Christie administration officials had in the new TV commercials, which are controversial because they give Christie more exposure during a gubernatorial election year, and also because they introduce him to voters in other states in advance of a possible 2016 presidential campaign. The top official on the selection committee, appointed by Christie, once received a $49,000 loan from Christie when he was the U.S. attorney for New Jersey.”

The heavy payday for MWW (the firm winning the bid)  is $2.2 million higher than what was sought by the competing firm, Sigma Group.  Shannon Morris, president and owner of Sigma Group, said she doesn’t have a clear understanding of how her firm lost the bid. Of the four bidders, MWW and Sigma were selected based on technical scoring by state officials for a final round of negotiations. They were also the two lowest-priced bids.

“I don’t know how you can qualify that as the best value for the state,” Morris said of MWW’s $4.7 million contract compared to Sigma’s $2.5 million offer. “You have two equally reputable firms and it’s debatable if one is better than the other. And in a competition like that it should come down to price, especially when you’re dealing with something as sensitive as Sandy recovery funding. To make a decision that spends $2 million more on agencies leaves me scratching my head. I don’t understand it.”

Here comes the interesting part about the two bidding companies. The two bidders had different views on how the campaign should be run. MWW wanted to put Christie in the ads. The other bidder, Sigma Group, did not. MWW won the contract- regardless of their demanding $2.2 million more. Is it possible that the official, who received a $49,000 loan from the Governor, made a bias decision in choosing ads that featured the Governor during his reelection? Seems likely.

In addition, MWW is a prolific political contributor, mostly to Democrats. However, its employees have given to Christie. Sigma Group hasn’t made political contributions.

Let’s Follow the money

MWW employees donated $1,000 to Christie’s 2009 Republican gubernatorial primary campaign and $1,500 to his 2010 inaugural committee. However, Michael Kempner, MWW’s founder and CEO, leans Democratic. Kempner hosted a political fundraiser for President Barack Obama at his home in Cresskill in 2010 and “bundled” — the term for collecting donations from friends and associates — almost $3.1 million in campaign funds for the Democrat in 2011 and 2012. Also, the MWW Group PAC spent $95,250 in the 2012 federal election cycle,  73 percent of the money going to Democrats. However, the largest single expenditure, $5,000, was paid to the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The Star Ledger, a local NJ newspaper says, Gov. Chris Christie’s habit of using his public office to promote his presidential ambitions has reached a new low.”

-Is Christie attempting to exploit federal dollars to promote himself through crony capitalism, or is he attempting to save the NJ tourism industry? Let us know in the comments below.

Eric Holder Demands Government Supervision Of Apple’s iTunes & App Stores

Attorney General Eric Holder has asked a federal judge to give his Department of Justice (DOJ) supervision of the Apple App Store and iTunes.

The DOJ’s demand is a disgusting attempted government power-grab into private business.

Holder’s request follows a decision by Denise Cote, a New York Federal District Judge. Cote ruled that Apple violates the US Anti-Trust Laws, which are designed to prevent monopolies and fixed prices.

Eric Holder

Apple plans to fight the federal ruling tooth and nail, and will almost certainly appeal.

The mega company currently gets 30 percent commission for any e-books sold on an Apple Store App. According to the Wall Street Journal, the DOJ is pushing for Amazon.com to be able to sell e-books on Apple Apps without the 30 percent commission.

Apple objects to government attempting to control the marketplace. Commission on App stores currently makes up for 10 percent of the company’s revenue. It would be a huge blow to Apple if Holder’s request is granted.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the DOJ is also “seeking a five-year prohibition on new e-book distribution contracts that would restrain Apple from competing on price.”

Good grief. Government has no place sticking its nose into the private marketplace. But it continues to do so, over and over, each time expecting better results. (Solyndra, anyone?)

Apple is an innovative, highly successful American business. The company provides thousands of jobs for citizens at a time when unemployment remains high.

Still, the DOJ insists that the company be restrained. Eric Holder, in all his wisdom, asserts that he is trying to protect customers from high prices and mega corporations.

But after further examination, the request seems a bit more partisan in nature.

Amazon.com gave over $100,000 to Obama’s presidential campaigns and donated thousands in equipment during his inaugurations.

But that’s just a coincidence… Right?

Journalist Fired for Negative Obama Editorial

President Obama visited Tennessee last week where he was greeted by a mass of protesters. In fact, the entire state seemed to react. Vulnerable republican legislators who are under fire for their more moderate, liberal positions distanced themselves from the President, and then came a surprise from the Chattanooga Times Free Press, which is a local newspaper. An article  headlined “Take Your Jobs Plan and Shove it, Mr. President” ran front and center. The article was written by editorial manager, Drew Johnson. Being a medium sized newspaper it is not often that their articles make headlines across the country. However, Johnson changed that. Media from around the country picked up Johnson’s editorial and it became the most read article ever published by the paper. Presbo

Johnson says the next day his boss told him that the headline had offended some people, and in the future to run changes by another editor just to have an extra set of eyes on it. Johnson apologized and agreed to the new policy. The paper fired Johnson the next day for “violating the normal editing process”. However, the new policy was in place only after the paper published the article. Furthermore, most people read it online and Johnson says they could have changed the title at any point. He says, “They fired me for a policy that never existed until after I wrote the piece.” Johnson  also says, “If it had said President Bush instead of President Obama I’d still have my job today.”

Johnson tweeted, “I just became the first person in the history of newspapers to be fired for writing a paper’s most-read article.” Johnson also says through Twitter that his wife was fired months ago for exposing the truth in articles concerning a local power company. The Obama editorial remains online, but with a new title.

Nashville Tea Party founder, Ben Cunningham, set up a donation page yesterday for Johnson stating,

“My Friend, Drew Johnson, did not deserve to be fired and certainly not within two weeks of his wedding and shortly before his birthday. In fact, He deserves a bonus and I hope you will join with me and see that he gets rewarded for asserting the most precious right we all have and that is free speech.”

So far, almost $1,500 has been raised.

We spoke with Johnson briefly yesterday and he did not wish to further comment publicly on the event, as he was celebrating his birthday.
