New legislation could erase Common Core standards

As more and more states begin to reject and propose bills against Common Core standards, new legislation has been released which could cause an end to the controversial education system.

Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) is the new chairman of the Senate’s education committee, and he has released two options to replace the education system. One replacement plan would have standardized requirements for math and reading between grades 3-8, while the other option offers states the choice to test annually or every three years to see how they are performing.

The second option, according to the Times-Picayune, would allow each state to choose which standardized test to administer to their students. Whether or not the state chooses to move forward with the Common Core standards would therefore be left up to the state.

Alexander also took time on Tuesday, while speaking on the House floor, to say he believes President Obama’s Education Department has overstepped its authority. He said he thinks the Education Department should not hold each state to a specific set of standards, but should allow each state to set their own standards. “The department has become, in effect, a national school board,” said Alexander.

While many believe a new proposed education bill is likely to succeed now that Republicans have control of Congress, not everyone is totally convinced it is the right choice.

Andrew Rotherham, one of the founders of the education consultancy Bellwether Education Partners, has said, according to the Washington Post, the point of Common Core was to make sure all children across state-lines were getting an equal opportunity to learn and achieve.

“This is basically a way,” says Rotherham on the legislation, “to make sure we don’t have a common definition. Some kids are going to get a really challenging and ambitious set of standards, and other kids are going to fall through the cracks.”

Tom Loveless, a scholar with the Brookings Institution, found students in states which have a more rigorous academic curriculum do not necessarily perform any better on standardize tests than their peers. Loveless argues the changes should not be made at the state level, rather individual school systems within the state need to be changed.

A study published by the Brookings Institution found, “students from wealthier families score significantly higher on [standardized tests] than students from poorer families,” within the same state.

Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.), a member of the Senate Education Committee, agrees with Alexander in saying changes are needed in the education system, but says annual testing is needed to make sure schools are meeting some sort of standard.

“We know if we don’t have ways to measure students’ progress, and if we don’t hold our states accountable, the victims will invariably be the kids from poor neighborhoods, children of color and students with disabilities,” said Murray. “These are the students who too often fall through the cracks, and that is not fair…This is a civil rights issue, plain and simple.”

CAUGHT ON VIDEO: Husband of Democratic State Senator Charged With Stealing Election Signs

On Wednesday, the Police in Middletown, Delaware issued an arrest warrant for Dana Long, the husband of Democratic Senator Bethany Hall-Long, on the charge of stealing campaign signs left on the roadway, such as the one featured in the video above that says, “Fix the Economy! Vote Republican.

According to Delaware Online, the video from First State Liberty was taken after “28 signs were placed on Middletown Odessa Road at Silver Lake Road, and on the 700 block of Middletown Odessa Road,” on Sunday, removed and then replaced by the campaign volunteers on Monday, and then once again removed.

Campaign volunteers arrived with video cameras to stake out the spot where the signs had been removed, at 2:35am on Wednesday morning. In the video, they pointed out what the signs looked like, along with the fact that they were labeled “Paid for by The Republican Party of Delaware.”

At 4:01am, the volunteers reported that a car pulled up, a man got out, and he started lifting campaign signs.

The man, who has been identified as Dana Long, openly defended his actions, saying “There’s no name on these signs,” as he proceeded to carry the signs to his car.

In the video, the campaign volunteers documented Long stealing the signs, as well as his car and license plate number, and the fact that other, similar stolen signs were present in the backseat of his car.

According to Delaware Online, the charge against Long is a “Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to 1 year in prison and a fine up to $2,300, including restitution and other conditions set by the court.”

VIDEO: Sen. Mike Lee condemns Democrats for trying to alter the First Amendment

WASHINGTON D.C., September 10, 2014 – On Tuesday, Senator Mike Lee (R- Utah) gave an impassioned speech before Congress detailing the threat S.J. Res 19, a new proposed constitutional amendment, poses to the  First Amendment.

If passed, the proposed amendment would grant Congress and states the power to regulate the raising and spending of money with respect to federal and state elections. Lee blasted the Democrats attempt to limit free speech and said our political system “keeps us free only to the extent that individuals rich and poor alike are able to say what they want and join together to form voluntary associations for the purpose of influencing the outcome of elections.” You can watch the full video here:

Libertarian Senate Candidate Shaking Up the Political Machine in NC

North Carolina joins at least 10 other states with Libertarian U.S. Senate candidates that are shaking up election season.

Libertarians are poised to draw votes in Montana, Oregon, Colorado, Minnesota, Iowa, Arkansas, Michigan, Virginia, West Virginia and Alaska. The party is currently working to collect enough signatures to appear on ballots in Kentucky and New Hampshire and is attracting attention with gubernatorial candidates in Florida and Kansas, the Washington Post reported.

In the Tarheel State, Libertarian candidate Sean Haugh’s support in four recent polls is between 8 and 11 percent.

The media states that Haugh’s strong support is not enough to win, but it’s conceivably enough to affect the outcome of the race. Those same results show the margin between incumbent Democrat Kay Hagan and Republican challenger, state House Speaker Thom Tillis, at 6 points or less.

“If it ends up being a one- or two-point race, Democrats could keep the Senate because of Sean Haugh,” said Tom Jensen, director of Public Policy Polling (PPP), which showed the Libertarian at 11 percent in its May and June surveys.

Haugh responds to the classical scared tactic from the right that says “if you vote for a Libertarian you’re throwing away your vote or you’re voting for a Democrat.”

“The only votes that count are the ones that vote “for” a candidate,” said Haugh.

Haugh states in the video below, “Voting for the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil.”

“Only Libertarians can be counted on to stop all war and let you keep your money,” said Haugh.
