Syria- Tuesday, American fighter jets and armed Predator and Reaper drones, flying alongside warplanes from several Arab allies, struck a number of targets in Syrian territory controlled by the militants, known as the Islamic State.

The U.S. along with Saudia Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Jordan are conducting the strikes against Islamic State strongholds. Interestingly, the strikes are taking place in Syria and yet the Syrian government is not a part of the coalition. This alone raises serious questions about the legality of such strikes.

After all, Syria is a sovereign nation and yet the U.S. is conducting war operations on its soil. The U.S. claims it needs no permission simply because President Obama has declared the Assad government illegitimate.

Unlike American strikes in Iraq over the past month, which have been small bombings of mostly individual Islamic State targets — patrol boats and trucks — the attack on Tuesday in Syria was the beginning of what was expected to be a sustained, hours-long bombardment at targets in the militant headquarters in Raqqa and on the border. Tomahawk cruise missiles were fired from United States Navy ships in the region.

This story, and any story in regard to U.S. and “coalition” strikes on the Islamic State would not be accurately reported without reminding readers that it was the United States and this exact same coalition including Saudia Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, etc. who supplied weapons, money and technology to the so called Syrian rebel forces over the past 3 years. Those forces took the weapons and supplies when defecting to ISIS.
