While Republicans hold their convention in Ohio and the media focuses on Melania Trump, the U.S. military has killed nearly 100 civilians, including women and children, and an 11 year old boy was decapitated by U.S.-backed Syrian rebels.
Politicians say they want to talk about safety; then let’s talk safety.
This is a Reality Check you won’t see anywhere else.
The pictures are heartbreaking. At least 85 civilians, including almost a dozen children, have been killed after U.S. air strikes targeted an area in northern Syria held by Islamic State. The New York Times reported that 56 civilians were killed Monday and another 21 killed Tuesday. Dozens more have been wounded.
So what happened?
The U.S. was attempting to hit ISIS strongholds and accidentally hit an area with several dozen families. Manbij city, where this strike happened, is one of the most barren regions of Syria.
The U.N. Commission on Human Rights estimates approximately 70,000 civilians have been stranded there as fighting between ISIS fighters and Western-funded rebels intensifies. Amnesty International said in a statement Tuesday that since June, more than 100 civilians have been reportedly killed in suspected attacks by the U.S.-led coalition in Syria.
“There must be a prompt, independent and transparent investigation to determine what happened, who was responsible, and how to avoid further needless loss of civilian life,” said Magdalena Mughrabi, interim Deputy Director of the Middle East and North Africa Program at Amnesty International.
So the drone strikes are one story, but then there is this: video that is so horrific that we cannot show you, but a video has surfaced of a group of Syrian rebels— yes the same Syrian rebels that the U.S. has been sending weapons and money to— beheading an 11-year-old boy who they claim is a spy.
The video is so ghastly that I won’t describe it to you, but I will tell you that internationally there is outrage as the boy appears to have been beaten and tortured before he is executed on camera.
Again, the group identifies themselves as part of Syrian rebel forces fighting against Bashar al-Assad, and from the same rebel groups who have received U.S. and Western military and financial support.
So what you need to know is that on Monday at the Republican National Convention, the discussion was “make America safe again” but there was absolutely no discussion whatsoever about how the killing of civilians or the support of “moderate rebels” who are beheading children make America safe.
There is also no discussion about this extremely harsh fact: that the war on terror has been an utter failure. As i have shown you before, the number of deaths in the Middle East from terrorism have increased 4,500 percent between 2002 and 2014, and that does not include the deaths associated with war.
When the war on terror seems to be responsible for only war and only terror, we must ask where is the accountability for these strikes? Where is the accountability for the funding of these rebels? Which presidential candidate is even willing to talk about this?
That’s Reality Check. Let’s talk about it on Twitter.
