Peachtree City, GA- Atlanta NBC affiliate 11Alive has reported that Margaret McCollom is in critical condition after being shot on Thursday by her husband, Peachtree City Police Chief William McCollom.
Police arrived at the McCollom home early Thursday morning in response to a call from Chief McCollom at around 4:15 a.m. reporting that he had accidentally shot his wife with his service weapon. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has initiated an investigation into the incident.
It was initially stated by GBI spokeswoman Sherry Lang that Chief McCollom called 911 reporting that he accidentally shot his wife twice. Lang has since clarified that only one bullet had been fired.
Neighbors reportedly said they hadn’t heard anything unusual before the shooting. Investigators have not yet disclosed what was happening in the moments before the incident but stated that the shooting occurred in the bedroom.
Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard said that if the shooting is ruled accidental, charges could still be filed against Chief McCollom.
McCollum is said to be cooperating with police as the investigation is underway, and he has been placed on administrative leave.
